Live fuel price scheme giving motorists more power at the pump

8 March, 2026

RAA has welcomed the State Government’s plan to extend South Australia’s real-time fuel pricing scheme and measures to bolster compliance and increase penalties for retailers who aren’t doing the right thing.

It comes as the number of motorists checking live fuel prices on the RAA app spikes by over 375% in response to the war in Iran as they search for cheaper fuel – making fuel pricing apps more important than ever.

According to RAA’s latest fuel survey, live fuel prices are saving SA drivers more than $58 million per year, with an average saving of $6.50 per tank of fuel.

The State Government on Sunday announced the real-time petrol price monitoring scheme will remain fully funded under a re-elected Malinauskas Government, with:

  • a tripling of the current funding for compliance, allowing an additional 100 fuel inspections each month
  • a doubling of the current penalties for failure to comply with any requirement imposed on a fuel retailer by the fuel pricing scheme.

This will see expiation fees increase from $550 to $1100 while the maximum court-imposed penalty for breaches will go from $10,000 to $20,000.

RAA General Manager Community & Corporate Affairs Emily Perry said live fuel prices give motorists the power to shop around, get the best price and save money at the bowser.

“Real-time fuel pricing puts the power of choice back where it belongs — behind the wheel with the driver,” Ms Perry said.

“Our analysis shows real time fuel pricing is helping motorists save more than $58 million each year.

“With the price of fuel continuing to climb, now more than ever we need transparency and accountability in the retail fuel market.

“SA’s real-time fuel price scheme holds retailers accountable and puts more power into the hands of consumers.

“Since the war in Iran began, we’ve seen a 375% increase in the number of people using the RAA app as they seek out cheaper fuel.

“We welcome the State Government’s commitment to continue the scheme while bolstering compliance and increasing penalties for retailers who fail to update fuel prices in accordance with the legislation.

“If you need to fill up or top up your tank, use the RAA app to shop around and get the best price available.”

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said:

“Thousands of South Australians are already taking advantage of real-time petrol pricing apps to ensure they fill up when fuel is cheapest.

“With the situation in the Middle East escalating, we expect many more to take advantage of this service.

“But we need it to be as robust as possible – and that’s why we’re taking to the state election a plan to boost compliance and beef up penalties for any retailers who do the wrong thing.

“It’s estimated that shopping around for fuel can save the average motorist around $6.50 a tank – and across the almost 500,000 drivers using price checking apps every month, this equates to more than $58 million in collective savings for South Australian motorists each year.

“By routinely filling up at the bottom of the price cycle, these savings can go even higher – and Labor is committed to ensuring that all retailers are doing the right thing by SA drivers.”

RAA lobbied for several years for South Australia’s real-time fuel price scheme to give drivers access to accurate price data, which became a reality for SA drivers in 2022.

The average unleaded price in South Australia on Sunday morning was $1.99 per litre.
