Through RAA’s Growth without Gridlock State Election platform, it has been calling on major parties to increase road maintenance funding to $250 million per year – up from the current $189 million – to bring SA’s road network up to speed.
The Liberal party’s pledge is a key policy response to RAA’s platform, which also calls for public transport investment and long-term infrastructure planning to support SA’s growing population.
RAA Senior Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain said tackling the road maintenance backlog before it gets even worse will be critical for the next State Government.
“We’re encouraged to see our road maintenance advocacy gaining traction in the lead-up to the election,” Mr Mountain said.
“The $2.1 billion backlog affects almost all South Australians – potholes, crumbling road edges and surfaces well past their use-by date affect both safety and productivity of the network.
“We look forward to all parties putting forward their plans to bring our roads up to an acceptable standard and invest in the infrastructure our growing state needs.
“From early February, RAA will launch an online State Election response tracker so South Australians can see party responses to our Growth Without Gridlock platform. This will help our members see where each party stands when it comes to the infrastructure we need to keep South Australia liveable.
“RAA will of course continue working with whoever forms government to ensure South Australia’s transport network can support a thriving, growing state.”
The latest Auditor General’s Annual Report shows, over the last five years, roads have deteriorated to the value of $1.6 billion while only $892 million had been spent on maintaining the road network – a shortfall of 45%.
