Twelve SA roads to get Black Spot safety upgrade
21 August, 2026
RAA has welcomed $7.5 million of new federal funding to upgrade 12 dangerous roads and intersections across South Australia, as part of the Black Spot program.
The funding will see works to improve safety at identified location including new barriers, signal upgrades, roundabout modifications and pedestrian safety improvements.
Among the largest projects are nearly $3 million to install sealed shoulders and other safety treatments along Ashbourne Road between Ashbourne and Strathalbyn, and $2.1 million for upgrades and widened shoulders on Flinders Rangers Way at Blinman – both sites with a history of serious and fatal run-off-road crashes.
Other funded works include $408,000 for new right-turn signals at the Hutt Street and Halifax Street intersection in Adelaide, and $240,000 for a pedestrian refuge, upgraded ramps and improved street lighting at the Granites Road and Railway Terrace intersection in Tailem Bend.
RAA Senior Traffic Engineer Matt Vertudaches, who represents RAA on the Black Spot Consultative Committee, said the funding was targeted at locations with a proven history of crashes.
“The Black Spot Program is an effective tool for targeting locations with a proven history of serious crashes and fixing them before more lives are lost,” Mr Vertudaches said.
“These 12 projects are backed by data, with most being raised by local councils who understand the risks on the ground, which means the funding is going to locations where it’s desperately needed.
“We’re particularly pleased to see funding directed toward regional roads like Ashbourne Road and Flinders Rangers Way, where simple treatments like sealed shoulders and safety barriers can make a huge difference to safety.
“RAA looks forward to seeing construction get underway on these projects.
“We’ll continue working closely with all levels of Government and the Black Spot Consultative Committee to identify further locations in need of safety upgrades, because projects like this can genuinely save lives.”
