The corner of Main North Road and Regency Road saw 32 casualty crashes (where someone is injured or killed) occur from 2020-2024, to see it take the mantle of Adelaide’s worst intersection over the period.
It was one of five Main North Road intersections to make the top 10.
The intersection – which carries around 69,000 vehicles a day – has seen consistently high crash numbers for the past decade, with right-hand turn crashes and rear end collisions the most common crash types.
The junction of Marion and Sturt Road at Marion – which has been Adelaide’s worst for the past three years – also saw 32 fatal or injury crashes occur, putting it second on the list (it recorded one less serious injury crash).
In third place, Curtis Road and Peachey Road at Munno Para recorded 26 fatal or injury crashes, despite carrying just over 30,000 vehicles per day.

It comes as the summer school holidays officially begin this week in South Australia, with RAA urging motorists to take care and look out for vulnerable road users.
RAA Senior Manager Road Safety and Infrastructure Charles Mountain said while many of the intersections on the list carry heavy traffic, there were risk factors causing a high rate of crashes that drivers should be aware of.
“RAA is always analysing crash data on behalf of South Australian road users to highlight which spots are seeing the most people injured or killed on our roads,” Mr Mountain said.
“Main North Road carries a lot of traffic but to see five of its intersections in the worst 10 for casualty crashes is extremely concerning.
“Last year alone, nine people were injured in crashes at the intersection of Main North Road and Regency Road.
“At this spot, most crashes occur on the Regency Road approaches, and right-turn crashes are the most common serious crash type.
“The corner of Marion and Sturt Road continues to be a concern, and should be looked at to see if safety can be improved, particularly for those turning right from Marion Road onto Sturt Road on both approaches.
“As the school holidays begin for thousands of South Aussie kids and Christmas shopping in full swing, we’re urging all road users to look out for each other and be patient.
“There’s likely to be more vulnerable road users like cyclists and pedestrians out and about, so stay alert and don’t get distracted while you’re behind the wheel.”
Among other priorities to create safer roads, RAA’s State Election Platform, Growth Without Gridlock, calls for a third lane on Main North Road between Montague and Kesters Road.
Across metropolitan Adelaide, 47 intersections recorded 15 or more casualty crashes during the five-year period, averaging at least three casualty crashes annually at each site.
Mr Mountain said these intersections carry tens of thousands of vehicles every day – so even small safety improvements can have a meaningful impact on crash numbers.
“We will continue to advocate for safer roads on behalf of all South Australians, including in the lead-up to the 2026 State Election.
“Our aim is to help government prioritise where funding will achieve the greatest safety gains for South Australian road users.”
