RAA analysis shows the average retail price of diesel in Adelaide has risen to $2.89 per litre on average in the past week.
But over the same period, the wholesale terminal gate price in Adelaide has actually fallen, dropping to $2.64 per litre as of Tuesday morning – a decrease of around 10 cents per litre compared to a week ago.
This means the gap between what retailers pay for diesel and what they charge motorists at the pump has widened to 25 cents per litre on average, up from 8.6 cents per litre just a week earlier.
For unleaded prices ahead of the long weekend, the average retail price sitting at $2.33 per litre against a wholesale price of $2.29 per litre, a margin RAA considers to be much more reasonable.
RAA Principal Advisor Energy Peter Nattrass said with thousands of South Australians set to hit the road for the long weekend, retailers should be passing on relief to diesel drivers as soon as possible.
“Diesel drivers have been feeling pain at the pump for months now, as the situation in the Middle East has driven up oil prices again and led to retail prices spiking,” Mr Nattrass said.
“Many major retailers have been quick to jack their prices up as soon as wholesale costs rise, so they should be just as quick to bring them back down when wholesale prices fall.
“Wholesale diesel prices in Adelaide have fallen by around 10 cents in the past week – but on the whole retailers are yet to pass any of that relief on to diesel drivers.
“A 25-cent per litre gap between wholesale and retail prices is hard to justify, and it’s South Australian households and businesses who rely on diesel that are wearing the cost.
“Our advice to motorists ahead of the long weekend, whether they drive diesel or unleaded, is to shop around and use the RAA app to compare prices and find the best deal before they fill up.
