According to RAA’s latest fuel report, 33% of drivers have started using fuel price comparison tools like the RAA app more often in the months since the Middle East conflict saw global oil prices spike – showing a significant change in driver behaviour.
With an average reported saving of 10c per litre by shopping around – or around $6.50 per tank – it equates to an estimated collective saving of $55 million per year across all SA drivers.

RAA Fuel Expert Peter Nattrass said the latest RAA Fuel Report showed South Australians were saving more than $55 million per year just by shopping around with real time fuel pricing, like on the RAA app.
“The RAA app is continuing to help motorists save at the bowser and put more money back into the household budget,” Mr Nattrass said.
“Importantly, it also shows drivers are now changing their behaviour more than ever to take advantage of savings.
“A significant 33% of drivers have started using real time fuel pricing more since the Middle East conflict saw global oil prices spike.
“This confirms real time fuel pricing is being embraced by motorists to help save on fuel.
“While these numbers are encouraging, our report also shows 43% of drivers are not using a fuel price app – meaning hundreds of thousands of drivers could be paying more for fuel than they need to.”
Minister for Consumer and Business Affairs Michael Brown MP said, “We know rising petrol prices are having a real impact on South Australians’ budgets, making transparency and accountability more important than ever.
“Each year, South Australians are saving around $55 million on petrol thanks to live fuel pricing helping them to shop around and buy fuel when its cheapest.
“With the median saving being 10 cents per litre, that’s hundreds of dollars a year being saved on fuel costs by using petrol price monitoring apps.
“The conflict in the Middle East is outside of the control of any Australian government, but we are making sure that petrol stations here in South Australia do the right thing by consumers.”
