The temporary fuel excise cut – introduced in response to record fuel prices driven by the conflict in the Middle East – has now ended, with the excise increasing to its new full rate of 53.7 cents per litre. The discount itself was worth 16 cents per litre, but the price rise motorists see is likely to be closer to 17 cents, as a routine excise indexation adjustment also falls today.
As service stations begin replenishing their fuel stocks at the higher price, motorists can expect to see the cost of unleaded and diesel climb by around 17 cents per litre.
The average price of unleaded in Adelaide is currently $1.98 per litre and diesel $2.38 per litre.
RAA Principal Advisor Energy Peter Nattrass said motorists should use a fuel price app like RAA’s to find the best available price.
The RAA app shows drivers real-time fuel prices at petrol stations across the state, making it easy to compare prices before filling up at the cheapest outlet most convenient to them.
The RAA app’s fuel price feature has been accessed more than 2 million times since the Middle East conflict began, peaking at about 40,000 daily users in early April.
“After months of watching fuel prices swing with global events, this is a timely reminder that a bit of research at your fingertips can make a real difference to the household budget,” he said.
“Shopping around for the best price in your area has never mattered more, because as fuel gets more expensive, every cent saved counts.
“Live fuel prices are already saving South Australians an estimated $58 million a year, putting the power back in drivers’ hands.
“We’re encouraging retailers to do the right thing and sell through their current stock at the reduced excise rate and we’d urge drivers to reward those outlets with their business.”
RAA members are reminded they can save 10c per litre at participating retailers across metro and regional SA, with more information and Ts and Cs available on the RAA website.
The RAA app is free and available for all South Australians, who can also use the app to check fuel supplies by retailer at any given time.
