Australia needs a fair and sustainable funding model to maintain roads and deliver infrastructure projects.
Ensuring all motorists pay their fair share
RAA has long called for the Federal Government to develop a fairer, more transparent, and sustainable model for road funding.
Currently, every litre of fuel purchased includes a tax of 49.6 cents which helps pay for roads, but this revenue stream will disappear as we transition to EVs.
With the growth in EVs and more fuel-efficient vehicles, some motorists will be paying a road user charge through fuel excise while other motorists will pay far less or pay nothing at all.
RAA supports replacing fuel excise with a nationally consistent distance-based charge on all light vehicles to ensure there is a sustainable revenue model to maintain a safe road network into the future.
Toll roads
RAA has long called for governments to develop a fairer and more sustainable revenue model to build and maintain our roads right across the state.
RAA does not support introducing tolls in South Australia on top of the existing fuel excise and other fees and charges – especially at a time when South Australians are grappling with the spiralling cost of living through record interest hikes and energy bills.
The focus should be on wholistic reform of the motoring tax system by introducing a road user charge that addresses the decline in fuel excise revenue with the introduction of EVs, rather than imposing an additional charge in isolation of any reform that will add to the cost of driving.
